Varanasi, also known as Benares, is the most sacred city in Hinduism and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Located on the holy River Ganga (Ganges) it is famous for its many ghats, which stretch for about 2km along the banks of the river and are a hub of activity and spiritual rituals.
